Drs. Penny Tam and Aman Nijjar are co-first authors on research recently published in PLoS One testing if a multi-faceted intervention will improve rates of handoff in an internal medicine inpatient setting. This study addresses an important question of whether handoffs affect clinical outcomes as measured through medical errors, frequency of patients requiring higher level of care overnight, and in-hospital mortality. The intervention did not result in a significant improvement in clinical outcomes, however handoffs remain an important patient safety issue and novel methods for handoffs need to be explored.
