Bio
Dr. Jay Pai is a dedicated General Internist in the Division of General Internal Medicine at UBC and a Clinical Instructor with the Department of Medicine. He earned his Master of Public Health and MD undergraduate degrees at UBC, followed by a core Internal Medicine residency and a General Internal Medicine fellowship at the same institution. His expertise further extends into Hepatology, with specialized training in decompensated cirrhosis, alcohol-associated liver disease, and palliative care for advanced liver conditions.
Currently, Dr. Pai practices full-time at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), primarily on the Clinical Teaching Units and the Hospital at Home Program. Additionally, he partakes in outpatient care at the Internal Medicine Clinic at VGH and the Victoria Liver Care Clinic at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, where he manages patients with decompensated liver disease, particularly those with ascites.
In 2024, Dr. Pai completed the Level 3 Physician Quality Improvement Training Program. His project led to the establishment of Vancouver General Hospital’s first outpatient therapeutic paracentesis clinic, significantly reducing recurrent hospital admissions for patients with decompensated cirrhosis and complex ascites.
