Celebrating the 2018 Graduating GIM Subspecialty Residents

On June 7, General Internal Medicine (GIM) faculty members and residents gathered for an evening of celebration at the fourth annual Resident Research Evening.

Held at the University Golf Club, the event was a chance for both faculty and residents to enjoy each other’s company, talk about their research projects, and celebrate their achievements from the past year.

Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. John Staples was the keynote for the event, speaking about his journey in developing his research career including challenges and successes.

Drs. Cary Cuncic and Aman Nijjar provided an update on their pilot project to have GIM fellows supervise and teach third-year medical students in an ambulatory care setting.

A highlight of the night was when PGY-4 Dr. Lawrance Chow presented Dr. Mike Kenyon from Nanaimo with the Faculty Teaching Award. This award allows residents to recognize a Division member who has made an impact on their Fellowship program. Lawrance spoke of Mark’s clinical acumen, generosity, kind mentorship, and sense of humour.

A large portion of the night was dedicated to the PGY-5 residents, who presented their research projects.

  • Dr. Paxton Bach (Characterizing the increasing prevalence of methamphetamine use in Vancouver from 2006-2016: a gender-based analysis)
  • Dr. Jesse Bittman (How do we measure up? Blood pressure measurement in the dialysis unit)
  • Dr. Tristen Gilchrist (The interplay between residents’ requests for clinical support and attending physician entrustment decisions on the Clinical Teaching Unit)
  • Dr. Steve Ham (Does Erythropoietin decrease perioperative transfusion?: A systematic review and meta-analysis)
  • Dr. Sarah Ickowicz (Criminal justice involvement as a risk factor for detectable plasma HIV viral load in people who use illicit drugs: A longitudinal cohort study)
  • Dr. Theo Jankowski (Addiction Medicine in Victoria)
  • Dr. Tom Walton (Linking a patient to HCV treatment from an injectable opioid clinic: A case report)

Division members celebrated the graduation of the PGY-5 residents and wished them all the best.
